Lesson Plan and Resources for Summarizing
This lesson plan is intended for grade three, but it could be used in grades 4,5, and I've even seen it in 6. I think that is a great way to summarize and provides students with a scaffold for writing summaries. This is a very basic summary, but it is very useful for news articles and non-fiction. I used the Scholastic News articles because I know that a lot of schools get this resource. If you wanted to use it with fiction, I would use the Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then approach as opposed to the 5 W's.

There are some more resources to go along with this lesson and summarizing...
This poster could be referenced when teaching summarizing. It would be a good poster that students can go back and look at throughout the year you are not working on summarizing. It states the rules for summarizing and then it says what a summary does not contain. I would use this to stress that a summary does not contain your opinion.
This could be used if you wanted to teach summarizing using fiction texts. It is much like the 5 W's graphic organizers and this lesson can be easily modified to use this resource.
